Regular perineum massage should begin 4-6 weeks before your due date. This will increase the elasticity of the skin between the anus and vagina so that during birth the skin should be stretchy enough to avoid tearing or the need for an episiotomy. As well as the practical advantage, perineum massage encourages a pregnant woman to become familiar with an area that she may otherwise not touch. Massage is best done after a warm bath when the woman is relaxed. Comfortable positions are lying down, squatting or with one leg up on a chair. Place both oiled thumbs no more than one inch into the vagina and stretch and massage the inside of the vagina and the perineum area. Do this once a day for about 5 minutes. The increased blood supply to the area during massage will also help with healing after the baby is born.
